“Most of Them are Honourable”. Luigi Villari and the Armenians during the 1905-1906 Armenian-Tatar War

Luigi Villari’s book Fire and Sword in the Caucasus, published London 1906, is widely quoted by scholars working on history of Transcaucasia, particular respect to Armenian-Tatar war. Yet neither this text nor its author have been so far studied detail. The Italian Villari (1876-1959) a figure considerable interest; he was diplomat, traveler, journalist. His father, Pasquale (1827-1917), an accomplished historian politician who played important role nineteenth-century Italy; mother British writer Linda White (1836-1915). It remarkable that wrote English at time when not popular language Italy. He extensively both about different topics, mainly related international politics. has shown that, after First World War, joined Fascism contributed actively regime’s propaganda Great Britain. present paper examines especially author’s attitude towards Armenians. I shall demonstrate his work, handles negative stereotypes Armenians (“one most unpopular races East”), which were common Russian empire beginning twentieth century, rather interesting way.
